Technology in education
To meet the new demands of the modern world, more and more educators agree to offer a teaching that extrapolates the contents of the traditional curriculum and contemplates technology, either as a teaching resource for the teacher or as a stimulus formula for the student. However, it is always necessary to take into account the essence of pedagogical objectives, being technological and digital resources important tools to foster learning.
Therefore, we listed some essential points to show the importance of technology in education.
The digital world
Today we have numerous digital devices (such as computers and smartphones, to name just the most popular) and the trend is that the presence of these devices increases more and more in our lives. According to ManpowerGroup, an American HR company, our children are likely to pursue professions that do not yet exist, almost all of which are focused on technology.
We cannot close our eyes to a near future in which it is no longer possible to remain only in the Office package. Having an education based on the use of technology will be the differential for the labor market in the coming years.
Adaptation to new demands
Brazilian urban schools had a Wi-Fi network, according to the ICT Education survey conducted by the Center for Information and Communication Technology Studies (Cetic).
The number is encouraging, but the survey indicates that the use of the wireless network is still restricted within schools: 61% of principals said that access is not allowed to students. This is bad, since it prevents them from exploiting the full potential of technological resources for the benefit of knowledge.
The study also served to evaluate how teachers view technology in education. The perception of most is positive. Check it out:
- 67% started to have contact with professionals from other school units;
- 77% ensured that it became easier to communicate with students;
- 94% said they have access to more qualified and diversified materials.
The world has undergone great changes and, in the current scenario, it is necessary to complement the use of traditional models (chalkboard) and adapt to new demands. Disseminating the use of technology within the school is fundamental to ensure that the school reflects the current social reality, in addition to providing an interactive environment that is closer to the reality of the students.
Digital natives
Unlike those born before the advent of the Internet and living in the transition from the analytical to the digital world, children today are already born immersed in the technological world. Better than barring the use or being averse to the application of new methods is to teach students a profitable use of available resources.
If you read this text from a mobile phone, know that you have at hand a device with superior processing power to the NASA computer that put man on the moon. But what use are we giving it?
Encouraging the conscious use of technology is making the student more than just a user or viewer of this resource. It’s giving him the support to go beyond, explore, create and be inventive.
Technology in education: ban or encourage
It is the fundamental role of the school to prepare the student for the modern world, which, whether or not it wants to be, is dictated by the massive use of technology. Instead of preventing use, we should use the school space to stimulate and educate for the proper use of this resource.
However, we must know that, by using technology, we are entering the field of knowledge of the student, since many of them have a greater domain than the teachers. It is a place where he feels at ease to be inventive and using usual tools such as computers and cell phones for education.
Technology must be critically present in school. Digital resources must be allied to teaching practices and pedagogical design. In addition, it is essential to educate in order to discern the right information within a sea of data and understand that the Internet goes beyond Google or social networks.
Whether or not to use technology in education is no longer a subject for debate. The new agenda is to know the best way to enjoy this resource and how we will alphabetize our students to the technological language.
